Celebrate farm life with Agriculture Week on Maryland’s Coast – Worcester County from August 3-11.

“From combines to crab races to countywide fairs, farm life will take center stage for this weeklong celebration,” said Melanie Pursel, director of Worcester County Tourism and Economic Development (WCTED). “We invite everyone to come out and discover the people, places, and festivals that make up the heartbeat of our vibrant, rural Worcester County farming community.”

Snow Hill, Maryland – (June 21, 2024): Effective immediately, Worcester County Fire Marshal Matt Owens issued a burn ban, and ALL outdoor burning is banned for an indefinite period of time in Worcester County.

Worcester County Government (WCG) offices, including all five Branch Libraries and Recreation and Parks, will be closed Wednesday, June 19, 2024, for Juneteenth, National Freedom Day.

The Central Landfill and Homeowner Convenience Centers will also be closed.

WCG offices will resume standard operating hours on Thursday, June 20.

Nassawango Road – partial closure June 11

A portion of Nassawango Road will be closed on Tuesday, June 11th to install new pipes under the road. The work should be completed that same day. Detour: motorists may utilize Whitesburg Road to Oak Hall Road to Scotty Road. For further information, contact the Roads Division at 410-632-2244.

Snow Hill, Maryland (June 10, 2024) – The Worcester County Commissioners appointed Katy Vieira to serve as the emergency preparedness manager within the Worcester County Department of Emergency Services (WCDES). Vieira stepped into her new position in late 2023.

“Katy is a great person and brings so much to this position,” Fire Marshal Matt Owens said. “She has proven to be a valued part of a great team. She is a proven leader and always steps up to the plate, continuing her education in all aspects of the job, and being a great role model.”

Pocomoke Middle School basketball courts and park dedication postponed due to contractor delays

The ribbon cutting for the new basketball courts and park at Pocomoke Middle School, previously scheduled for June 12, has been postponed due to contractor delays. The dedication will be rescheduled after the court striping can be completed.

On June 4, 2024, the Worcester County Commissioners approved the Fiscal Year 2025 (FY25) Operating Budget of $261,917,617.

“This is a fiscally conservative budget that allocates funding to cover vital public services and needed capital projects without burdening property owners and taxpayers,” Worcester County Commissioner President Chip Bertino said. “I want to thank our staff, agencies, and department heads on their partnership to ensure that taxpayer money is allocated judiciously.”

Snow Hill, Maryland (June 3, 2024) – The Worcester County Commissioners named Maurice “Moe” VanDemark as the new emergency management specialist within the Worcester County Department of Emergency Services (WCDES). VanDemark stepped into his new role on April 15.

“We are incredibly fortunate to have Moe as part of our team,” Fire Marshal Matt Owens said. “Moe brings a trove of knowledge and experience with him, and we are looking forward to what he will add to an already great team.”

Snow Hill, Maryland (June 3, 2024) – The Worcester County Commissioners appointed Charlene Sharpe to the newly-created position of legislative analyst. She stepped into her new role May 31, 2024.

“Charlene has earned the community’s respect for her professionalism and her fair and accurate news coverage,” Chief Administrative Officer Weston Young said. “She can hit the ground running covering Worcester County. Her strong oral and written communications skills make her the solid choice to represent the county’s legislative interests.”
