Worcester County, MD (June 30, 2026) — The Worcester County Commissioners appointed Shytina Drummond to serve as the next warden of the Worcester County Jail (WCJ). Drummond, who currently serves as the assistant warden, will succeed Warden Tim Mulligan, who will be retiring in November.

"Drummond has demonstrated exceptional leadership, professionalism, and dedication throughout her career," Commissioner President Ted Elder said. "We are confident the jail, its employees, and the citizens will be well served under her leadership."

Worcester County Government (WCG) offices will be closed Friday, July 3, 2026. 

Snow Hill, MD – Worcester County Government officials are advising residents and visitors that there are currently no lifeguards on duty at the Maryland district of Assateague Island National Seashore and is urging anyone planning to swim over the Independence Day holiday weekend to use extreme caution.

Visitors to Assateague Island National Seashore are encouraged to consider swimming at nearby guarded beaches, including Assateague State Park and Ocean City. 

Snow Hill, MD — Worcester County property owners will be able to access their 2026-2027 real estate tax bills online beginning July 1, 2026. 

To repair a water main, Public Works will shut off water to an estimated 31 homes for all of Pelican Court and all of Wharf Court on July 8 from approximately 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., with an alternate date of July 9. Water service will be affected for approximately 2-4 hours, while crews make the repair. 

Following the repair, area residents may experience brown water. If that occurs, please allow the water to run for a few minutes until it becomes clear. If the water remains brown, please contact Water and Wastewater at 410-641-5251.

Worcester County Emergency Services officials urge residents to take precautions and check on elderly, vulnerable, and homebound neighbors, as dangerously high temperatures and heat index values exceeding 100 degrees are forecast for the area Wednesday through Sunday. 

“Extreme heat is one of the deadliest weather hazards, but heat-related illnesses and deaths are preventable,” WCES Director Chris Shaffer said. “Looking out for one another during periods of extreme heat can save lives.”

On June 2, 2026, the Worcester County Commissioners approved the Fiscal Year 2027 (FY27) 
Operating Budget of $300,172,146. 
“This budget provides meaningful salary increases for our valued employees and makes 
substantial investments across all departments, while still maintaining a fiscally conservative approach,” 
Worcester County Commissioner President Ted Elder said. “It includes a historic funding increase for 
the Board of Education and ensures that law enforcement has the resources to address public safety 
needs.”

Worcester County, MD — The Planning Commission will host a public hearing on the 2026 Comprehensive Plan. Residents are encouraged to attend and share their perspectives on future growth and development. The hearing will take place July 9 at 1 p.m. in the Worcester County Government Center in Snow Hill.

Worcester County, MD — The Worcester County Commissioners named Seth Place as the new deputy finance officer. Place, a certified public accountant (CPA), brings over 9 years of progressive experience in public accounting, specializing in tax, client accounting and advisory services (CAAS), and financial reporting and analysis. His experience spans over a variety of sectors, including private, nonprofit, and government.

Worcester County Government (WCG) offices, including all five Branch Libraries and Recreation and Parks, will be closed Friday, June 19, 2026, for Juneteenth, National Freedom Day. 

The Central Landfill and Homeowner Convenience Centers will also be closed. 

Saturday, June 20, standard operating hours will resume for all five Branch Libraries, Recreation and Parks, Landfill, and HOCCs.

Monday, June 22, standard operating hours will resume for all other WCG offices.
